HMDCB Statement re: COVID-19

The leadership of the Hospice Medical Director Certification Board (HMDCB) continues to monitor the COVID-19 outbreak throughout the United States and the world. We are committed to providing updates as necessary on this website, and encourage you to review the Centers of Disease Control’s (CDC’s) website for emerging changes as this outbreak continues.

Along with many other hospice physicians across the country, HMDCB’s Board of Directors are in the middle of dealing with the ongoing pandemic in their practices. Their experiences give them first-hand knowledge about the difficulties currently being faced by candidates and potential candidates for HMDCB’s certification programs, heightening their desire to provide additional flexibility to those physicians.

The Board of Directors met on Thursday, April 16, and made the following decisions to provide that additional flexibility to those interested in initial certification or renewing their current certification.

Initial Application and Exam Windows

For those interested in becoming certified in 2020, the HMDCB Board has decided to extend the end of the current exam window through September 15. The updated exam window will be June 15 – September 15, providing additional time for the exam to be administered and for candidates to prepare.

To assist those physicians who are interested in applying but are dealing with the pandemic at their institutions, the Board has also decided to extend the initial application window through Friday, June 12, while also eliminating the $250 late application fee for 2020.

Continuing Certification Program (CCP) Application and Exam Windows

For those eligible to renew their certification in 2020, which includes those who initially certified in 2014 and 2015, the HMDCB Board has chosen to delay the launch of the 2020 CCP application cycle to June 22. This delay will provide additional time to better understand COVID-19’s impact, allowing the Board to determine if changes to the fall CCP exam window are necessary. The Board has chosen to eliminate the 2020 CCP late application fee as well.

We continue to encourage interested candidates to review PSI’s enhanced procedures in place during the COVID-19 pandemic on the company’s website. Additionally, our Frequently Asked Questions document will continue to be updated to reflect any changes that occur.

Late last week, we were made aware that our testing partner, PSI, has closed all its testing locations through April 13 to both adhere to the latest guidance from the CDC, as well as to continue to help protect the health and safety of candidates, clients, and employees. We appreciate their efforts.

HMDCB’s Board of Directors is committed to offering an exam for those interested in becoming certified in 2020. To most effectively do so, the Board has decided to move our examination window by 30 days to June 15-July 3. Current applicants will receive communication about how to reschedule their examination for the new window.

To assist those physicians who are interested in applying but are dealing with the pandemic at their institutions, the Board has also decided to extend the initial application window by 30 days through Wednesday, May 13. The early bird application deadline to save $250 has also shifted to Monday, April 27.

Should additional changes be necessary in the future due to the ongoing pandemic, the Board of Directors will convene to determine that change and will communicate with applicants.

We continue to encourage interested candidates to review PSI’s enhanced procedures in place during the COVID-19 pandemic on the company’s website. Additionally, our Frequently Asked Questions document will continue to be updated to reflect any changes that occur.

We encourage candidates who are interested to review these updated procedures on PSI’s website.

We have developed a Frequently Asked Questions document for candidates and potential candidates that we will regularly update, and should it be necessary, we will update this statement as well.
